President Ranil Wickramasinghe visited Jaffna on 15th of January 2023, to take part at the Thai pongal celebrations organised by government officials including Minister of Fisheries Douglas Devananda. President participated in Pongal rituals at the Sivan Kovil in Nallur, and also delivered a speech at Dhurkadevi Mani Mandapam Temple in Nallur, Jaffna. Meanwhile the family of the disappeared and the students of the university of Jaffna organized a protest march from the University of Jaffna to Nallur where celebrations were organized. When the protesters were marching towards the venue, Police fired tear gas and water cannons at them at the Arasadi junction in Nallur.
