Northern provincial council member, Thurairasa
Ravikaran, was arrested by the police on the 28th of February and produced to Mullaitivu Magistrate Courts. Mr. Ravikaran was accused of disrupting government officials and damaging public property during a protest held on the 22nd of February at Vaddavakal, Mullativu. He denies the charge and was later released on bail. According to the protesters, 600 acres of private lands were going to be taken over to build a Navy base and the decision had been already published in the government gazette. The government officials, including surveyors, came to the site but were turned back by the protesters who were led by
the provincial councilo.
