Three commissioners of the Human rights commission wrote a letter complaining about the HRCSL chairperson retired justice Rohini Marasinghe on 9th April. This letter was sent with the signature of the three HRCSL commissioners, Dr. Vijitha Nanayakkara, Dr. Nimal karunasiri and Ven. Kaluphana Piyarathana says in the letter that the chairperson justice Marasinghe has that she is working contrary to the Human Rights Act. Replying to the letter, the HRCSL chairperson said in a newspaper interview that those who are accusing her do not have knowledge of Human rights. . She further said the Human Rights Act no.21 of 1996 itself states that those who have understanding of Human Rights should be appointed. The Human Rights Commissions consist of the five commissioners and all of them were appointed by the president, on the recommendation of the constitutional council. Their period of time is 3 years as per the act.
