Description

On 27th of May 2018, a protest against farming of cucumbers on the coasts of Thalayadi, Maruthankerny, and Sembiyanpattru, was held by a group of Vadamarachchi fishermen when their livelihoods have been badly affected due to such activity which was carried out by seasonal fishermen from North Western Province. Since then, protesters claimed to have received ill-treatment given by Navy intelligence officers that include death threats and threatening telephone calls. They were also menaced by the officers through abductions while being asked to “see the 4th floor”, the floor of the CID (Criminal Investigation Department) notorious for torture of detainees.
