A teacher named A. M. Kumara Addarege working at the School Galauda Maha vidyalaya in Badulla district in Uva province was suspended from duty by the Uva Province Secretary of Education on 04th July 2022 over a facebook post he had published supporting people’s protests against the government. According to a statement issued by the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU), Addarage has been an activist who was actively involved in anti-government protests. CTU further alleged that this action was taken after a complaint made by the current Member of Parliament, and former chief minister of Uva Province Chamara Samapth Dassanayake, as a reprisal for being engaged with protests. On 17th May, he was arrested by the Haliela Police station in Badulla district over the comments he had made in social media, and presented before a magistrate. Despite the Police request to remand him further, the court has granted him bail. Then his duty was suspended in July, 2022, alleging that he had violated the Section 31:1:10 of Chapter II of the Code of Disciplinary conduct for the state employees in Uva Province , which says that “employees shall not act in a manner that causes indignity to the Uva Provincial Council or government service.
