On 8th of July, the Inter University Student Federation (IUSF) organised a protest demanding the resignation of the ruling government. This was organised to extend the support to the mass protest that was organised the next day by all protesters in GotaGoGama, occupy protest site. IUSF student activists marched from University Kelaniya premises to the GotaGoGama protest site on 8th of July and stayed overnight there and joined protests the next day. In this context, the Police went to the court seeking a restraining order against the student protest, which the court rejected. On 7th July, the Colombo Chief Magistrate rejected the request made by the Cinnamon Gardens Police station to issue a restraining order against protests organized by the Inter-University Student’s Federation (IUSF), to prevent protesters from entering several roads in Colombo during the protests. However, the Police used tear gas and water cannons attempting to disperse the protest march at the entrance to Bank of Ceylon Mawatha, Colombo.
