Description
On 18th of February, filing a special motion before the Supreme Court, the NEC informed the
court of its inability to hold the local government election on 9th March as previously planned,
due to the government's failure to allocate required funding.
After a retired army colonel filed
a writ petition against holding elections in the context of the current economic crisis, at least 5
intervening petitions were filed in December and January by opposition political parties and
their members requesting to hold elections without a delay. A month ago on 18th January,
the Election Commission assured the Supreme Court that Local Government Election will be
held on time, as the petitions named them as respondents.
